For many people running just isn’t in the cards. You might be one of those people. Maybe you have existing joint problems. Maybe running just doesn’t feel good. That’s okay. Walking is a great way to get and stay in shape.
Why Walking Works
You body was designed to move. When you walk, rather than sit, your body releases hormones. These hormones improve your mental well being. They improve your metabolism. They also help you sleep better and have more energy.
Most everyone can walk. Walking doesn’t put a heavy strain on your joints. You also don’t have to walk at a high intensity to reap the benefits. You can of course speed walk or walk for a long duration to maximize your benefits.
However, even walking a few miles a day can make a huge difference. Walking is also something that you can break up into segments during the day. Few people go out for a ten minute run. You can absolutely go out for a ten minute walk. In fact, a ten minute walk after sitting for an hour or two at your desk can be very refreshing and energizing.
A Few Ways to Add Walking into Your Day
#1 Walk to work, if possible. If not possible, park far away from your building. Take the stairs and try to fit walking into your day.
#2 Take walking breaks. Instead of taking a break to chat with a friend or to grab a snack, go for a walk.
#3 Create a habit. Start walking in the morning when you wake and in the evening when you get home. A few ten minute walks throughout your day can add up. Aim to walk a minimum of 10,000 steps a day. That’s about five miles.
#4 Get a walking treadmill. Most treadmills are designed for running. However, with the increased attention to the benefits of walking more manufactures are creating “walking treadmills”. A walking treadmill gives you the ability to walk in your home. You can walk and watch television or walk and listen to music. You can also walk whenever it fits your schedule.
